Taking the relationship a stage further is the sponsor or patron. These are people who for some reason want you to succeed and are willing to invest their time, networks and even money to help you. While mentors prepare people to move up into their next role, sponsors open the doors, facilitating the move and making things happen. They put their reputation on the line to advance your career.

Traditionally, many artists have been heavily dependent on patrons to support their work. These days, however, sponsors can also be found in other walks of life.

A 2010 study of people of both genders who held MBAs found that men were more likely than women to have powerful sponsors.8 Women were over-mentored and under-sponsored. This will need to change if women are to be appointed to top roles.

Traditionally, many artists have been heavily dependent on patrons to support their work. These days, however, sponsors can also be found in other walks of life. For example, it can be argued that angel investors who put their money and expertise into early start-up companies are really sponsors—they have a statistically low chance of ever getting their money back. Crowdfunding websites such as Givealittle and PledgeMe also present opportunities for people to connect with sponsors.

Rachel Petero is someone who appreciates the value of sponsors: ‘Sponsors will talk about you when you’re not in the room. I’ve had them because I have a goal and they’re part of maybe that wider network that can introduce you, that can talk about you. They can sponsor you into governance, into leadership, into a career, actually. But also in business they can recommend you.’

The key to attracting sponsors is doing good work that excites you, and building your skills and profile so that people take notice and want to be part of your work. It is not enough just to look for people to help you—you need to generate great work that attracts people to join you.
